Reddit – the global social media platform – is considering integrating World ID technology, a biometric identity verification solution developed by Worldcoin (WLD), a startup co-founded by Sam Altman. According to a report from Semafor on June 20, 2025, Reddit is in the internal discussion stage about applying eye-scanning technology to verify user identities on the platform while maintaining anonymity – a core element of Reddit.
The World ID technology operates based on a retinal scanning device called Orb – a metal sphere approximately the size of a bowling ball. When users agree to eye scanning with the Orb, the AI system processes retinal data to confirm that it is a real person, not a bot, and ensures each individual is issued only one unique ID. This aims to prevent fake accounts and help Reddit protect the integrity of its community.
However, if Reddit officially implements World ID, this will not be the only verification method. The platform will still allow users to choose alternative authentication methods to suit their individual privacy needs and preferences.
Reddit's consideration of advanced biometric technology like World ID indicates a growing trend in applying blockchain and AI solutions to digital identity verification, especially in the context of social media platforms facing issues of fake accounts and bot abuse. If approved, this could be an important step in integrating Web3 technology into existing Web2 platforms.
