The Ethereum Foundation has donated $500,000 to support legal expenses for Roman Storm, co-founder of Tornado Cash, ahead of the expected court hearing on July 14 in New York.
The organization also committed to adding up to $750,000 from community donations. "Privacy is normal, and writing code is not a crime," the Ethereum Foundation emphasized on X.
Roman Storm is calling for a total of $2 million to prepare for his defense. He was charged in 2023 with money laundering and sanctions violations for operating Tornado Cash – a cryptocurrency transaction mixing service that was previously added to the US Treasury's sanctions list (OFAC) in 2022, but was removed in March this year.
In May, under the Trump administration, federal prosecutors indicated they would withdraw part of the charges related to operating an unlicensed money transfer service, but would retain charges of money laundering conspiracy and violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
In a recent post, Storm called for community support: "If I lose, DeFi dies too. The dream of financial freedom, the lines of code I believe in – will fade into darkness."
